`SOUND` Advice to Stop Hearing Loss

Noise especially loud noise is one of the major causes of hearing loss. Our ears are made up of an outer ear which includes the ear channel, this feeds the sounds picked up onto the ear drum. The ear drum vibrates as the sound hits it causing the three tiny bones in the middle ear to vibrate and amplify the sounds. The tiny bones of the middle ear are connected to the inner ear which contains a snail like structure called the Cocklea. This is filled with liquid and also contains very fine hair cells. When the sound reaches the Cocklea it causes the fine hair cells to vibrate according to the vibrations reaching them. Some of these fine hairs are tuned to high frequency sounds whereas others to lower frequency sounds. There are fine hairs covering the full range of Audio sound.
If the sounds reaching the outer ear are excessively loud these very sensitive hair cells in the inner ear can become damaged thereby affecting their ability to react to normal levels of sounds Loud sounds do not immediately damage the ears but if these loud sounds continue over a longer period, then a gradual destruction of the ability of the fine hair cells to react to the vibrations at normal sound levels will increase. It is generally thought that hearing loss only occurs as you get older with people over 65 being the most at risk, however, it is now becoming more and more apparent in the younger generation. In the modern day loud sounds have almost become the norm. More and more people, especially the young, now have personal stereo equipment, attend Discos or Pop Concerts where the music is usually at full volume. This is when the damage to the ear can be most affected as the loud sounds are being heard over a long period of time especially for regular concert goers. Also because of the age of the person the ears are in a much more delicate state.
When told about the possible damage that may be happening to their ears most young people do not seem to care and do not believe it could cause hearing loss in a few years time.
There is no way the younger generation are going to be persuaded to either turn down their music to a reasonable level or wear ear muffs to cut out some of the sound. It is therefore quite obvious that more and more younger people are going to have to wear Hearing Aids to overcome the hearing loss they have.

  1. I agree that loud noise is one of the major causes of hearing loss. We should try to avoid loud noise as much as possible for the shake of our hearing and that of our loved ones.
